Back to (yoga) school
Join me for a whistle-stop tour of yoga history and philosophy every Saturday afternoon for 4 weeks. Learn about sutras and kleshas. Know your chakras from your koshas. Dip into karma and dharma. Discover how we went from Patanjali to Lululemon. Each week I will give an introduction to the topic, followed by Q&A and group discussion, as we interpret and challenge yogic perspectives through a modern lens.
4 x 2hr online sessions, 1–3pm Saturday
Plus access to my Saturday morning asana practise, 10–11.30am

Week 1: Where it all began — an introduction to the history of yoga
We will kick-off by looking at what yoga is as well as an introduction to it’s complex history. We will discuss some of the main yogic philosophical texts, from the Vedas to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and which practices and philosophies derive from them.
Week 2: Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and the 8 limbed path, then and now
This week we will be going deep into one of modern yoga’s most influential and referenced text, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. We will discuss some of the key sutras and philosophies in each of the 4 chapters, as well as discuss in detail what ashtanga, the eight limbed path, is.
Week 3: Shanti what? Understanding fundamental principles in yoga
Pranayama. Bandhas. Chakras. Koshas. Kleshas. This week we will demystify the terms and ideas that continue to be used, or misused, in the yoga world. We will understand their origins and possible application.
Week 4: Yoga in the modern world — the rise of postural yoga, consumerism and commodification
We will finish by focussing on the evolution of yoga in the last 150 years. Discussing how yoga went from counterculture to pop culture and how consumerism and the rise of postural yoga was a complete game changer. We will look at some key influential teachers and discuss controversies in the yoga world, as well as where women have stood throughout history.

I've been teaching Yoga since 2004 and Teacher Training for more than five years, having trained with a multitude of amazing teachers, including doing over 300 hours with Richard Freeman. I run the Teacher Training programs at Yogarise, as well as my own 200 and 500 Hour courses, based both in London and abroad.
I'm a workshop leader at Imperial College's annual GPs conference, and lecturer at Imperial Medical School, teaching a module about the Science of Yoga and Mindfulness to GPs in training. I'm a true believer that Yoga is for everyone no matter what the circumstance, teaching in both schools and prison.
I maintain a thread of philosophy and tradition in my teaching and remain forever grateful to those who have influenced my teaching.
